OUR LIL' EXPLORER

recap of spring, 2010

so my co-workers and i have mentioned more then once that children say the darnest things and that they make us laugh and wonder omg and wtf all at the same time. now the purpose of this new experience (for me and you all) is to admit (respectfully) that the above is true, humorous at times and makes us all at one point or another stop and reflect and or appreciate.

1. april 2010 (beginning) OUR LIL' EXPLORER
while being observed (for ecers) we go on a walk observing the new spring season and revisit an area of secluded patch of grass for the children to explore and be safe. yes ourr observers are still with us. my team and i review rules and safety precautions and allow the group to do what they do best: enjoy themselves. well as i apprach the barrier of where the grass stops and the mulch and bushes start however a child beats me to the spot and keeps going.

i notice a large shape ( a rock is what i thought it to be) as the words "no...leave it alone...dont touch that" were leaving my mouth he had already bent down and picked it up. he turns around with a great big smile like he had just discovered a treasure left by peter pan and we all notice the dead rat he is holding by the tip of the tail. his peers are in awe with "oooo's and ahhhhhh's" and our head teacher screams and runs to the other end of the patch of grass, i scream and stay frozen with my arms out to stop the rest and our brave cl.rm aide steps up to the plate to get close enough to coaxed our wonderful 4 yr old explorer to drop the rat (still while shaking her head in disbelief) lmao now but we werent then...and off he goes to get disinfected and the observers stand around us in disbelief and confusion. the teachers are laughing now but not happy about the observers beign there to huddle and whisper at the end.....

walking back to school after all is done i ask him " werent you grossed out or scared? he replies NOOOOOO....i wasnt. i ask "well how did it feel?" his response "soft and mousey".

he was our classroom hero for the day and everyones weekend story..

  1. Yet another classic moment in our classroom that I don't think any of us will forget for years to come
